Civil War?

In the last week in Sao Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, more than 80 people have been killed in civil unrest that is attributed to the isolation of gang leaders within jails. A gang known as the First Command of the Capitol (PCC) is responsible for coordinating the violent attacks across the city with revolts taking place in 70 jails.

While truly unfortunate, having spent time in Brazil, this most recent bout of violence is of little surprise. Brazil is one of the most violent places in the world and this violence is the number one cause of the country’s deaths. Violence in the country is attributed to a number of factors, the most pervasive, in my opinion, being the inequity of the country’s wealth.

If you’ve seen “City of God” you have some idea what the situation is like, though, familiarity with such human destruction isn’t something that I’d wish upon anyone.
