Quote Of The Moment

"How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg? Four; calling a tail a leg doesn't make it a leg."

--Abraham Lincoln

After reading Doris Kearns Goodwin's book about this man, I'm on the fence as to whether I think of him as a genius or a man who effectively dodged the issue of slavery in a war to preserve the Union.

Good quote though...

I'll take it one step further: he was open to continuing slavery. I haven't read the book you refer to, Smartness, but my own research points to the fact that had the Confederate States been open to negotiation, Lincoln would have allowed slavery to continue where it had already existed. He abolished slavery only when the Union army was losing support, and he needed the man-power of the abolitionists.
